The Magical Art That Transcends Wynwood Walls

Miami has a vibrant love affair with colors, from the pastel blues and pinks adorning its buildings to the stunning murals throughout the city. You feel an electric energy emanating from these colors, infused with a Cuban flair. This city invites you to experience love, lust, and an entirely different world.

Wynwood, a neighborhood in Miami, elevates this experience to another level with its extraordinary art scene. In this blog post, I will explore the history of Wynwood, share the best time to visit, and explain why you should check out this vibrant part of Miami.

Run Down Warehouses

In the 1970s, the Wynwood neighborhood was just a collection of old gray warehouses. However, in the early 2000s, developer Tony Goldman, an arts patron and preservationist, envisioned a colorful transformation for the area. He decided to revitalize Wynwood by creating the renowned Wynwood Walls, bringing local artists' work to life.

Graffiti, Murals, and Live Action Art!

These famous walls feature over 35 hand-sprayed murals, graffiti quotes, sculptures, and moving art! How can art move, you ask?

Well, with their augmented reality app, you can interact with some of the murals in a new way. Once downloaded, open the app and point your phone at the designated wall to immerse yourself in multidimensional art. Seeing the artwork come to life through your screen as you admire the mural is a uniquely satisfying experience.

What’s more, over the past 14 years, Wynwood Walls has showcased more than 120 artists from 20+ countries. This means they feature at least ten artists simultaneously, and the art is continually changing! Introducing new art to Wynwood is extensive but rewarding, especially when you appreciate the intricate details involved.

Admission to Wynwood

Wynwood Walls offers several admission options. You can purchase general admission tickets either online or at the entrance. Your ticket allows you to explore two street art galleries, view over 35 murals, and visit a gift shop.

Alternatively, you can join an official guided tour that lasts 55 minutes, which provides you with the opportunity to ask questions about the artists, their concepts, and their techniques. There is also a "Learn How to Spray Paint" tour available.

Admission prices range from $12 to $50, with the first tour starting at 10 a.m. and the last tour ending at 7 p.m.

The Wynwood Neighborhood

After visiting Wynwood Walls, make sure to explore the vibrant neighborhood itself. Wynwood is pedestrian-friendly, offering a delightful experience as you wander the streets and discover hidden murals on surrounding buildings. You can also browse local shops and enjoy live music from area restaurants. Although I chose to explore the Little Havana area and dine at the famous Versailles Restaurant, I highly recommend taking the time to savor the local cuisine.

I had a great time exploring this incredible neighborhood and supporting local artists. My favorite mural is featured below. Please share your favorite in the comments, and let me know if you’ve tried any local restaurants, as I’d love to check them out the next time I’m in Miami!
