7 Must-Visit Spots for Food and Drinks in Phoenix

This was my third time in Phoenix as an adult. To provide some context, I am originally from Arizona and moved to Pennsylvania as a child. The other two times, I didn't really get to explore what Phoenix has to offer. To be fully transparent, I am not the biggest Phoenix person, but I enjoyed my time wandering its streets and trying food and drinks. Below are my top 7 recommendations for you to go. These range from coffee shops and beer gardens to restaurants.

First Draft and Changing Hands Bookstore

Another third space that captured my heart! This unique establishment seamlessly combines a bookstore, café, and bar, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing or productive afternoon. Whether you're browsing the local bookstore, enjoying a drink, or participating in community events like trivia, this is a great place for solo travelers to connect with others and get a book or two!

Rough Rider

If you are looking for Victorian-era cocktails, this is your place! My cousin and I stopped here for a drink. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to try their food. But they are famous for their contemporary and modern American cuisine. Located in the famous Roosevelt area (shops, restaurants, and mural of Roosevelt on the building), once you step off the elevator, you step into a moody Eddison lite area with a picture of Roosevelt. You feel like you are transported back to the 1800s with their bar and all the exposed stone beams. Here, you can order your drinks from an oversized leather couch in front of a fireplace with candles inside.  Great place if you are looking for ambiance!

 El Zaguan Bistro

A charming, family-owned restaurant nestled in Downtown Phoenix. Since its opening in December 2021, it has been welcoming guests with its cozy and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant is renowned for its delectable dishes that showcase the region's rich flavors and culinary traditions. Their food was so amazing! I had their tacos, and I haven’t had authentic Mexican taco since friends have made them for me. Such a treat and they are not too far from Threads, the third space I mentioned in another blog post.

 Arizona Wilderness Beer Garden

We were not planning to stop here but as we were wandering the street, their vibrant mural art entices us! Here you can get the best craft beer with outdoor dining with firepits! This beer garden focuses on local and sustainable ingredients, offering a variety of house-brewed beers along with delicious food options. It's the perfect place to relax, meet some new people, people watch and enjoy the Arizona weather. Fun fact! Did you know if you drink their beer, you are helping to save water?

If you weren't aware, the water supply in the Southwest is facing challenges due to ongoing droughts, increased demand, and climate change. The beer is brewed using barley from Sinagua Malt, which is based in Arizona's Verde Valley (where I grew up!). Sinagua collaborates with local farmers to transition from traditional summer crops like corn and alfalfa to barley, a late winter and spring crop. This shift helps reduce the amount of water diverted from the Verde River during periods of high demand and low streamflow, leaving more water for both people and wildlife. As a result, they can offset more than 50 gallons of water for the waterways for every pint they sell! How cool is that?

Don Woods Say When

Located in the heart of Phoenix is a rooftop bar designed in a retro style, known for its stunning panoramic views of the city skyline and eclectic decor. This place has mid-20th-century aesthetics, which offers a unique experience with vintage furnishings, stylish seating, and a relaxed atmosphere. They also have fire pits, which I love. There is something relaxing about taking in the views and having a drink next to a fire!

 Windsor

I understand it is my cousin's favorite place to eat since it is a quaint neighborhood gem! Windsor has such a welcoming ambiance and really good food! The menu offers a variety of mouth-watering dishes, ranging from hearty brunch options to satisfying evening meals. You can enjoy their charming indoor space or outdoor patio. We chose to sit in the patio option since it was a warm December night! After dinner, my cousin recommended their IBC root beer float! I am not the biggest dessert person after dinner, but I understand why he suggested it; it was the best root beer float I have ever had!

 Window Coffee Bar

I had a wonderful morning at this charming establishment. This café has a cozy and inviting atmosphere with rustic decor and comfortable seating, making it an ideal spot for relaxation or catching up with friends. You can enjoy a variety of espresso drinks, cold brews, specialty lattes, and freshly baked pastries and snacks. I highly recommend their turkey sandwich—I had it twice during my visit! Also, their Chaga Mushroom coffee is amazing!

I'd love to hear which place you'd like to visit! If you're in Phoenix and there's a spot I've missed, please share it in the comments. Your recommendations will help me plan my next visit and make this guide even more comprehensive!
