7 Memorable Things to Do in Grindelwald, Switzerland
When I stayed in Interlaken, I spent a whole day in Grindelwald. I thought Interlaken was magical (which it is), but Grindelwald is on a whole different level!
I planned to hike Schynige Platte to First Hike, but as I mentioned in the Top 7 Things to Do in Interlaken, Switzerland, I couldn't; the trails were still closed because of the snow. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this magical fairytale village!
The walk from the train station (from Interlaken) to the heart of town is only 10-15 minutes, but if you prefer, you can drive from Interlaken and try to find parking.
1. Take the Gondola to First Mountain
If you've been following me for a while, you know I love great views, especially from a gondola (see my posts on Telluride, Colorado). This is a MUST-do in Grindelwald. During the 25-minute trip up, you will be in the heart of the Bernese Alps. It really feels like you are floating above the mountains as you get an enchanting panoramic view of the stunning jagged snowcapped mountains against the blueish sky!
Once you get to the top, you can walk around and get more pictures of the upper Grindelwald glacier, the Wetterhorn, the Schreckhorn, the Kleine Scheidegg, the Männlichen, and Grindel. You can even enjoy food at Berggasthaus First, a restaurant at the top of the mountain with epic views. Sadly I didn't grab food there since it wasn’t open when I arrived. But I hear it’s a must-do!
If you want even more adventure, you can ride a mountain cart, scooter, zip line, or a first glider and fly like a bird.
2. Visit Glacier Canyon Grindelwald
Since most of the hiking was closed, the closest thing to a hike was walking from the town to Glacier Canyon, which was a 20–25-minute walk. You can also take a bus to get there.
Once you pay, you enter the gorge. You start to walk on an elevated walkway 870 meters down the canyon with walls 300 meters tall. Glacial ice once covered the gorge, but sadly, the glacier is no longer there due to climate change.
Along the way, you can enjoy being suspended in the air by walking on a netted "spiderweb" that stretches across the gorge. It is mind-blowing how you are above the gorge on a net! If you feel even more adventurous, you can canyon swing (free fall 90 m above the canyon, swinging up to 75 miles per hour).
I saw someone do it while I was there!
3. Paraglide
As I mentioned in my 7 Things to Do in Interlaken post, you can also paraglide here. I didn’t realize paragliding was a super popular activity until coming here. Though I paraglided in Interlaken, it doesn’t matter where you do it—just be sure you do it somewhere! I highly recommend paragliding. The views and experience are once in a lifetime!
When you paraglide, you do NOT jump off a cliff. Instead, after the very scenic drive to a grassy hill, your instructor attaches to you. All you must do is run down a mountain, and the wind does everything else! Honestly, it was not scary at all. Think about how a plane taxis . . . the pilot gives it all the power, and you lift off.
4. Visit the Village of Laturerbun
Laturerbun is famous for Staubbach Fall, which drops 270 meters, making it one of Europe's highest vertical waterfalls. The hike up the falls is steep but totally worth it! Also, if you feel more adventurous, you can hike behind the falls. Just one warning: you will get wet!
Seeing the town high up from behind a waterfall was super cool! You can grab some coffee at a stand at the waterfall and just walk around the town, enjoying the views. They are different from those of Interlaken and Grindelwald, as Laturerbun has more lush green fields.
5. Visit Interlaken
Interlaken was my base for four days. Here, you can walk around the charming town and stroll about to find some souvenirs, Swiss Chocolate, local beer, food, and views!
Also, Interlaken is famously known for the Harder Kulm, which is the best place to get some stunning views of the Alps, and you can even enjoy a pint or food at the top of the mountain! You can paraglide here as well! This is where I did my Paragliding adventures. If you are feeling even more adventurous, you can take a dip in the Brienz or Lake Thun and have a nice little cold plunge!
6. Get a Drink at Basecamp Restaurant
After my trip to Glacier Canyon Grindelwald and doing many headstands along the way, I stopped here to grab something to eat and drink. However, I wasn't in the mood for their food, so I had a Swiss beer instead. This restaurant is a perfect place to enjoy a meal or a drink and the Swiss Alps as a whole. Hands down, it has the best view in town while eating until you are at the top of First!
7. Walk the Town
You must take the time to wander the streets here! This is one charming little town filled with so much! After exploring and trying Swiss Chocolate, you can grab a sandwich and a beer from the local survivor shops, sit at a table, and enjoy a view for a much lower price than eating at a restaurant!
